Durdam Lodge, The Downs

Whole Home Renovation

Project Outline

Often noted as one of the prettiest houses in the area, but internally the house simply did not work nor flow.

A complete rethink was needed. The internal layout was completely redesigned with the help of interior designer Ben Bracey.

The main staircase was removed and relocated and a magnificent new one in oak fitted. This opened up the space on both floors, allowing the formation of new bedrooms and a complete first-floor layout.

A sheltered courtyard garden was incorporated, the garage converted into a luxury office, and a new orangery was added.

We had the pleasure of working with Don and Peter, together with their team of outstanding and professional craftsmen, on a major renovation of our Georgian home.

Over a period of 18 months, the team took our 6,000 square foot house back to the bare stone walls, removed the floors, all the plumbing and electricals and the roof.

They then rebuilt the entire house including a new slate roof, extensive redesign of all the downstairs and upstairs rooms, made possible by moving and replacing the staircase, new solid oak floors with underfloor heating, complete electrical and ethernet rewiring, a new security system, new plumbing throughout, including 4 new bathrooms and a new kitchen, extensive handmade cabinetry, new sash windows and hardwood doors, new and repaired stained glass windows, new and repaired moulding, new lighting throughout, a large orangery and mud-room extension, new attics, and a stand-alone garage conversion to impressive office/gym.

The team also managed a complete garden layout redesign including new perimeter and internal stone walls, new antique paving stone driveway and walkways, extensive garden electrical work including EV power and electric gating, plus building our ‘garden pub’.

It’s hard to imagine the scale and quality of this project, but no request was ever too much for the team. They always seem to know just the right person to bring in to meet our high expectations and get the job done.

We’re particularly grateful for the ongoing support we receive from Don and Mike. There are often little redecorating or repair jobs necessary with a large house and the team has always stepped in or guided us to the right people when these come up.

We could not imagine doing a project of this magnitude without working with them.
